Unsteady Hands

The last time I broke a heart

I tried to jigsaw it into one piece again.

When that failed,

I filled the cracks with gold to buy his forgiveness,

because my apologies didn’t mean much

and we both knew I wasn’t to be trusted

with fragile things near cliff edges.

I had a tendency to panic when passed precious items,

fingers turning from bone to butter

and ‘I didn’t ask for this’

is not what you say to ‘I love you’.

Silence isn’t much better

but what shattered him in my hands

were the words ‘I’m sorry,’

as I tried to give it back without breaking both of us.
